Created by Roger L. Crique as part of the Dominican Heritage Collection, this piece was inspired by one of Roger’s own childhood memories. His older brother once took him to the Hipódromo Perla Antillana, where Roger experienced the thrill of horse racing firsthand. His brother had a horse he was hoping would win—but that day, the horse lost.

The artwork captures more than the race itself. It reflects the excitement of being a youngster introduced to a new world by an older brother, watching the horses thunder past while the adults around him studied their programs, shouted encouragement, and waited anxiously for the finish.

Hipódromo Perla Antillana is a tribute to a memorable part of Santo Domingo’s past and to those ordinary family outings that become unforgettable pieces of childhood.
