The scene recalls the manicero carrying his basket of peanuts from house to house and the woman selling fresh green pigeon peas while expertly balancing a large container on her head, cushioned by the traditional rolled cloth beneath it.

Long before ordering groceries from a phone or driving to a supermarket for every ingredient, vendors like these brought food directly through the neighborhood. Their distinctive calls announced their arrival before they were even seen, and for generations of Dominicans those voices became inseparable from memories of home.
