A family memory preserved through history.

On September 3, 1930, Hurricane San Zenón struck Santo Domingo with devastating force, destroying thousands of homes and leaving much of the city in ruins.

For Roger L. Crique, the event is also part of his family's oral history. His mother, Marta “Panchita” Torres, remembered the hurricane from her childhood. She told him how their humble wooden home collapsed around her and her mother during the storm. Her mother was injured, while Panchita emerged physically unharmed.

Rendered in dramatic black and white, this artwork depicts the shattered wooden homes, fallen palms and storm-ravaged landscape left in San Zenón's wake. More than a depiction of a historic hurricane, it preserves a story passed from mother to son—a fragment of family history that might otherwise disappear with time.

Roger L. Crique Heritage Collection — preserving the moments, places and stories that shaped a life.
