Roger L. Crique Heritage Collection Slate Desk Plaque | Montando Patineta y Barquitos en la Cuneta

Description

Montando Patineta y Barquitos en la Cuneta recalls a childhood when imagination turned an ordinary neighborhood street into a world of adventure. With pieces of wood, discarded roller bearings, scraps of plastic, and a little ingenuity, children could create their own toys—and then create the games to go with them.

Created by Roger L. Crique for the Roger L. Crique Heritage Collection, this natural slate desk plaque is inspired by Roger’s own childhood. Handmade patinetas were constructed from wood and metal roller bearings, then ridden down the middle of the neighborhood streets. There were no store-bought skateboards involved—these were creations the children built themselves.

Along the curb, another competition unfolded. Tiny, nearly flat pieces of plastic, about an inch long and shaped like little boats, were placed into the flowing gutter water. Friends crouched alongside the cuneta, following their barquitos and waiting to see which one the current would carry ahead.

This piece celebrates the resourcefulness of childhood and a generation that could create an afternoon of excitement from almost nothing. A piece of wood became transportation, a scrap of plastic became a racing boat, the street became a track, and the gutter became a river.
