Roger L. Crique Dominican Heritage Slate Desk Plaque | La Zurza
$36.88
Description
La Zurza captures a piece of Dominican childhood that generations will recognize—the irresistible adventure of going swimming with your friends, even when you knew perfectly well that Mamá had told you not to go. This natural slate desk plaque depicts young boys gathering along the rocks of La Zurza, some already swimming while another takes that unforgettable leap into the water below.
Created by Roger L. Crique as part of the Dominican Heritage Collection, this piece was inspired by his own childhood memories in Santo Domingo. As a boy, Roger and his friends would venture to La Zurza to swim and jump into the water, despite knowing they might be punished when they returned home. And Mamá had her own way of discovering the truth—she would taste his arm to see if the water had left its telltale trace.
With the words “Donde los muchachos iban aunque Mamá dijera que no,” La Zurza is more than a picture of a swimming hole. It is a tribute to childhood friendships, mischievous adventures, worried mothers, and those seemingly ordinary moments that become some of our most treasured memories.
